Historical Home Sparks Landscape Ideas

106 years ago, a home was built and it belonged to one of the longest serving mayors of Joplin, Mo. Now, the first house in the Roanoke neighborhood that’s considered architecturally rich could become a historic landmark. After winning approval from City Council, the house which is located at 721 N is to get an award for local landmark status by owners Jill and Jason Sullivan. The house was built in 1910 for Jesse Osborne, who also happens to be a partner in the realty company that developed the northwest Joplin neighborhood.

According to the article by joplinglobe.com, “The Sullivans’ foursquare house on North Sergeant Avenue has historical value to Joplin and the Roanoke neighborhood.”

“We were fascinated by the history of the home and how it had been maintained — how it had been there for so long and throughout all that time the historical integrity was still intact,” Jill Sullivan said. “There has never been a major renovation of any sort other than there had been three sleeping porches added either in the 1920s or 1930s.”

The article also mentioned that “the Sullivan’s are mainstays at the Joplin Public Library. Jason Sullivan is a senior research assistant and Jill Sullivan last year was selected as executive director of the Post Memorial Art Reference Library, housed in the public library, after working for a decade in the main library. In fact, the Sullivan’s acquired the house from Jill Sullivan’s predecessor at the Post library, Leslie Simpson and her husband, retired Missouri Southern State University English professor Dale Simpson.

Approaching retirement, the Simpsons decided to sell the house so they could move to St. Louis to be near their children and grandchildren. It was a pleasant happenstance for both the Sullivan’s and Simpsons when the Post job and the sale of the house occurred together.”

Additionally, “the structure of Osborne’s house has not been substantially altered, though it had been changed cosmetically before the Simpsons owned it.”

“It had been modernized by previous owners into the 1970s style with flocked wall paper and sculptured carpet. The carpet was the first thing to go, and we refinished the (wood) floors. I spent many, many years stripping paint from the woodwork. It was more cosmetic things I wanted to do to take it back to the period,” Simpson said.

A recent article by landarchs.com states that “Using mulch or rocks is a great way to ensure that you don’t get overrun by weeds after you plant your newly acquired end of the season sale plants.”

The article also states that “A great idea for landscaping and bringing in nature in a creative way is to strategically plant fruit trees. Fruit trees can add a special something to a boring yard. Not only do they add texture and dimension, but they also are easy to grow and are useful for providing yummy treats for the family. In the spring they will also have delicious smelling flowers that will accent your yard.”

More specifically, according to the article, “If you are trying to save a few bucks and love to find a great deal, then you should consider checking out for the discount plants. You can come across some great deals that you can plant right away and enjoy. These are usually larger because they have had the whole season to get bigger so they will fill spots in your yard more fully than if you were to buy them at the beginning of the season.”

Lastly, the article states that “When in doubt, go with roses. They are usually inexpensive and look wonderful no matter where you plant them. Just be sure that you know if they will require a surface to climb on or if they are the standard bush variety. Roses always add an air of sophistication and charm to any landscape.”

Like the Sullivan’s, it is not impossible to live in a home you can be proud of. It doesn’t even matter what era your house was built, the type of house it is, or whether you are working with a large or small amount of space. What matters, is that you will be able to tweak it into something you like and something you are proud of without spending too much time, money and effort.
